Gardening
Lots of different work is done on a garden, vegetable garden or terrace, from design and improvement through planting and care to enjoying your hobby or firing up the grill. Given the diversity of tasks to be performed, the danger and risks associated with each also vary. The vast majority of applications in the garden environment do not involve extreme or serious risks. But they do require substantial use of the hands and can cause lacerations, bruises, cuts, blows and entrapment. Other tasks considerably increase the degree of danger: applying phytosanitary products or handling cutting tools such as chainsaws requires the use of appropriate PPE, taking the suitable safety measures.
The garden is also a place to enjoy times of fun and relaxation. For children, helping to care for the garden is a safe learning and entertainment opportunity with our Juba Kids range. Collecting and making floral works, taking care of the garden and enjoying a barbecue are all part of the pleasure once the work is done.
In this catalogue we provide a detailed guide to all the tasks that take place in a garden and the specific solutions for your hands in each one.
Garden design and maintenance
Garden renovation and maintenance work involves a wide variety of minor jobs. Some applications require specific cutting protection since sharp metal elements may need to be handled when fencing, placing garden props or sharpening chainsaws and shears. Others require greater touch for more detailed applications, such as laying artificial turf or installing lighting. Small masonry work, the placement of pergolas or decorative elements, watering installations and the construction of greenhouses require abrasion protection that does not restrict hand movements or cause fatigue, since we need to maintain intensive use of our hands with the confidence of a good grip.
Green areas
Preparing green areas involves adding soil, making furrows and moving dry or wet earth to prepare the planting zone. We can opt for a waterproof, flexible glove that allows us to handle wet soil, remove weeds and carry out planting tasks. Elastic gloves with a fully watertight nitrile coating combine tightness with ergonomics to perform this function in complete comfort. This work also requires waterproof gloves to water gardens. Here we advise using a model that covers the forearm and is flexible and comfortable, such as PVC gloves with a cotton support to absorb sweat and provide added comfort and warmth. A double and triple layer PVC coating with a sandy finish ensures better grip on wet objects and protects hands from abrasion. For general gardening or in urban gardens, lightweight, flexible gloves that fit like a second skin allow you to perform all the jobs precisely and with touch, protected from scratches and dirt. Rough latex-coated gloves are ideal for the maintenance of roses and thorny species, as they protect from pricking. They are also suitable for weeding. Finally, the most intensive tasks involve pruning and handling wood and branches. Intensive work with wood, from cutting to clearing, picking leaves from it, intensive pruning, and the replanting and trimming of hedges and large trees involve risks of all kinds, such as abrasion, cutting, bruises, blows, etc., and require very robust gloves that are not necessarily flexible or tactile. Instead, leather is the perfect material for this rough handling work because of its strength and thickness. Professional and intensive pruning involves the use of chainsaws and the potential for serious hazards. Dedicated chainsaw gloves are made from layers of cut-resistant material on the back that blocks the chain, while the palm maintains touch and flexibility for good grip and tool handling

Phytosanitary treatments
When we use chemicals to fertilise and treat our garden or vegetable garden, we must take safety measures to protect our hands and body from chemicals that can cause severe burns. Given the exposure to chemical agents, we recommend using category-III PPE. From within the disposables range, it is a good idea to choose a thick and durable model that broadly covers resistance to chemical substances. To extend protection to the forearm as well, the best option is a long nitrile glove with a non-slip finish to ensure optimum grip. In terms of body protection, it is best to use a Steelgen type 5 or 6 certified disposable chemical-protection coverall to protect against solid toxic particles and liquid chemical splashes and to provide biological protection. In addition, in fumigation processes we must always protect the airways and eyes.
Machinery and tools
Trimmers, hedge cutters and lawnmowers are some of the power tools used in the garden that emit vibrations. To protect yourself from them we recommend a glove with padded palm protection that absorbs some of the waves. Protection of the knuckle area is also highly recommended to cushion blows. In the case of hand tools such as hoes, rakes, foot-ploughs, etc., a cowhide grain leather glove with additional palm reinforcement provides good flexibility and comfort.
Swimming pools
Chlorine, algaecide and other products intended for cleaning and maintaining swimming pools must always be applied with a chemical protective glove. In addition to handling chemical substances, pools require water analysis and the unblocking of drains and sumps. It is best to use a waterproof glove with chemical protection and extra length to avoid getting wet. An anti-slip palm pattern prevents hands from slipping during work. In addition to the hands, users should wear eye protection since pool products can be corrosive and contact with the eyes can cause irreversible damage.

Enjoying the garden
After the work is done, it is time to enjoy your garden and do so safely. Gardening is a popular hobby: taking care of plants and flowers and making floral works and crafts are pleasant ways to spend our free time. Both traditional cotton gardening gloves and more modern versions with elastic support and palm coatings are the best choice for all kinds of light applications in the garden, vegetable garden or terrace.
With our Juba Kids range, children will learn and have fun collaborating in plant care tasks, while their much more sensitive hands will be protected. For water-related work, we offer a long, waterproof latex glove. For light applications and to handle branches and utensils, the rough latex model offers protection against pricking, scratching and discomfort.
A grill or barbecue is a feature in many gardens; terry cotton gloves with a flame-retardant treatment allow safe handling of utensils, charcoal and grills.
